Get to know the various types of blood gluecos tests

Blood glucose tests vary, with different functions. Blood glucose testing can be done only to determine blood sugar levels, diagnose diabetes and determine whether blood sugar levels in diabetics are controlled or not.

Blood sugar levels always change, especially before and after eating. Normal blood glucose before meals ranges from 70-130 mg / dL. After eight hours of fasting, blood sugar levels must be less than 100 mg / dL. If the blood glucose test is done two hours after eating, the normal result is less than 140 mg / day.

Examination of blood sugar levels can be done in a clinical laboratory. It can also be done alone at home using a device called a glucometer. The trick is to prick the finger with a special needle to bleed. The blood is then stored on the glucose strip, which is stuck on the glucometer. The results can be obtained in just 10-20 seconds.

Type of blood glucose test

Based on blood collection time and how to measure it, blood glucose tests are divided into several types, namely:

When to test blood sugar
This blood glucose test can be done at any time without having to fast and not know when you last ate. This test can be done to monitor blood glucose levels in diabetics or to assess high and low blood glucose levels in patients with certain conditions, such as weakness or fainting.

Blood glucose testing at that time cannot be used to diagnose diabetes. In this test, people without diabetes can achieve high results if they come to eat foods with a high glycemic index, such as ice cream or cakes.

Fasting glucose test

This test is used as the first test to diagnose prediabetes or diabetes. Before this blood glucose test is complete, you must fast for the night or at least eight hours.

Blood glucose test two hours after eating (after prandial)

Ten minutes after eating, blood sugar will start to rise and peak after two hours. Blood sugar will return to normal 2-3 hours later.

Post-glycemic prandial glucose testing is carried out two hours after eating the patient and is usually done after a fasting blood glucose test. This test can describe the body's ability to control blood sugar, which is related to the amount and sensitivity of insulin in the body.

Hemoglobin A1c test (HbA1c)

This blood test is used to determine the average amount of sugar in the blood during the last 2-3 months. This test measures the percentage of blood sugar that is bound to hemoglobin (Hb). This test can be done to diagnose diabetes and determine whether blood sugar is controlled in diabetics or not.

If your HbA1C is greater than 6.5% in two tests conducted at different times, chances are you have diabetes or your diabetes is not controlled. Levels between 5.7 and 6.4% showed prediabetes and less than 5.7% were considered normal.

Control blood sugar

Increased blood sugar that does not reach diabetes is called the condition of prediabetes. If nothing is done, this condition can develop into diabetes.

For people with prediabetes, the way to control blood glucose is to change your way of life, including regulating your diet and exercising regularly. Whereas in diabetics, blood glucose must be controlled, both by regulating diet and taking medication.

Long-term high blood sugar can damage blood vessels and increase the risk of heart disease and atherosclerosis.

Diabetics are encouraged to take blood glucose tests regularly and visit their doctors regularly. Thus, the doctor can control whether the drug given controls the patient's blood glucose.

Blood glucose testing is indeed important for the diagnosis of diabetes. However, not all blood glucose tests can be used for this purpose. Therefore, you should consult your doctor before taking a blood glucose test. Remember, also check the results with your doctor.
