Earwax can make the baby feel uncomfortable. But before cleaning it, you must know how to clean the baby's ears. Because if you do it carelessly, it can hurt the baby's ears.

Earwax or cerumen is a normal thing that is formed and has several advantages for the little one's ears. This earwax protects the ear from dust and keeps it dry and free of infection.

But if the amount is excessive, earwax can accumulate, which interferes with the child's hearing or makes him feel clogged and uncomfortable ears.

When to clean your baby's ears?

Earwax has an important function in maintaining the health of the baby's ears. However, it is undeniable that cerumen can also cause problems if it has accumulated too much and hardens in the ear canal.

Some problems that can occur because of accumulation of earwax are:

  • deaf
  • The ear smells
  • There is a sensation of buzzing in the ears
  • Ear pain or itching

Mother and father must suspect that the child has symptoms of earwax if he often draws his ears, shakes his head or becomes more agitated. If your child has these signs, you should immediately take him to the doctor.

How to clean baby's ears

To clean your baby's ears, avoid using cotton swabs or your fingers. The use of cotton swabs or fingers to clean the ears can actually penetrate dust into the ear and potentially damage the baby's eardrum.

To clean baby's ears properly and safely, follow these two methods:

Use washcloths and hot water

Use a washcloth to clean your baby's ears every day. Cleaning your ears with a washcloth is a method recommended by your doctor because it is considered the safest. However, this method only applies to the external ear.

To do this, start by wetting the towel with warm water. Then press washcloth until enough water is wasted. After the washcloth is moistened, gently wipe the outside of the baby's ear with the washcloth.

Avoid using a washcloth that is too moist to clean your baby's ears, because water can get into his ears.

Use drops
In addition to washcloths and hot water, cleaning your baby's ears can also be done with drops. However, the use of ear drops is not haphazard. You should consult with your doctor first to determine the type and dosage of drops depending on your child's condition.

If your doctor recommends or prescribes ear drops, here's how to use it to clean your baby's ears:

  • Get rid of your baby, with the ears you want to clean.
  • Put the medicine 5 times (or as directed by the doctor) in the baby's ear.
  • Hold the baby's position for 5 to 10 minutes so that the drug actually gets into the ear.
  • After 10 minutes, turn the baby's position with the ear that has been given drops down.
If the method above does not help clean your small ears, consult your ear, nose and throat doctor. The doctor may prescribe other ear drops or perform an ear cleaning procedure, for example with a wax aspirator.
